The Miami Valley Regional Network is the marriage of two concepts. Several years ago the Greater Dayton IT Alliance, www.daytonitalliance.org , conceived the idea of creating a regional IP network switch called the Dayton-Metro Internet eXchange (D-MIX) to keep local network traffic local and enable highly interactive applications and low latency dependent real-time collaboration solutions for the 12 county greater Dayton area.
See www.donet.com/~dmix/ . At the same time the Miami Valley Communications Council, www.mvcc.net , was working with its member municipalities and the City of Dayton to use Time-Warner institutional network fiber and municipality traffic signals fiber to create a backbone network to interconnect educational and government agencies into a single regional network. The Greater Dayton IT Alliance and MVCC have since merged these network activities into a single system currently named the Miami Valley Regional Network (MVRN). Senate Bill 117 removes the Time-Warner fiber from this regional network on about Jan 23, 2008. As a result the MVRN has initiated a fast-paced program to work with all municipalities and educational institutions in the region to restructure the network to operate without the 120 miles of Time-Warner dark fiber. At present this program is in the requirements gathering and design phase but we expect to move into implementation by early September if MVCC, DATV DGTV, and many municipalities and school districts in the region are to continue to operate with present capabilities and minimum cost after Jan 23, 2008.
